My First Solo Exhibition – “Trees in Their Places”

Towards the end of 2018, I decided my photography needed  a better sense of direction and purpose. I had not been a member of a traditional photographic society for maybe 3-4 years and I felt that more contact with like minded photographers would provide me with inspiration and motivation to move my photography forward.

Some years ago I had been a member of the Lancashire Monochrome Group. Lancs Mono are a non-competitive group whose main focus is the monochrome print and whose meetings are mainly made up of members presenting their work in an atmosphere of mutual cooperation and encouragement. This sounded like an attractive proposition and a decision to rejoin the group was not difficult.

On the east side of the Pennines there is another photography group – the Yorkshire Monochrome Group. They have a similar ethos to Lancashire Monochrome, although most of their meetings also include a speaker and a good lunch :). A monthly trip over the hills certainly has its attractions so I joined the Yorkshire Monochrome Group as well.

Both decisions have worked out well, I am pleased to say. In the last nearly two years I have presented my images before some very accomplished photographers and some of my prints have been hung in exhibitions as far wide as Leyland, Wath, Saddleworth and Keighley.

And now, through an arrangement between Lancashire Monochrome Group and the Mercure Hotel Bolton (BL6 5RU on the A6 near Blackrod) and with thanks to both, I have my first solo exhibition. It can be found in the main bar area in the hotel from Monday 7 September 2020 until the end of the year.

The exhibition is about trees and the spaces they occupy in the landscape. I have featured some of the magnificent places that trees are privileged to occupy. In some images, prominence is given to a single tree or a group of trees, in others the main focus is on the space around them.

Prints of images in the exhibition will shortly be made available for purchase. Details of how to purchase prints can be found on “Prints For Sale” page. I will be uploading a gallery including all the prints from the Exhibition shortly. In the meantime, if you have enjoyed the exhibition, please leave a comment below.

Here is a teaser from the exhibition from one of my favourite places – Buttermere.
